Members of the Visual Arts at Chautauqua
Institution are invited to show their original work in Logan
Galleries for the first time. This group show always offers a
diverse mix of styles and media for all to enjoy.
The Chautauqua Center for the Visual Arts (CCVA)
is changing its name! For the past several years, the CCVA has
included the CCVA Galleries on Wythe Avenue, Logan Galleries
on Bestor Plaza, the Chautauqua School of Art, and the Visual
Arts Lecture Series. In order to offer greater clarity we are
changing the name of the larger visual arts entity from CCVA
to VACI, Visual Arts at Chautauqua Institution. The Visual Arts
at Chautauqua Institution will continue to include the School
of Art, newly renovated and expanded galleries at the Strohl
Art Center (formerly the CCVA Galleries), Logan Galleries on
Bestor Plaza, and the Visual Arts Lecture Series on Tuesdays,
Fridays and Sundays. In 2009, Logan Galleries will be replaced
by the Anne M. Kellogg Art Center, where a renovation will include
two new floors of public exhibition space, as well as an outdoor
café serving as a visual connection between Kellogg and
the Strohl Art Center.
The expansion and renovation of the former
CCVA Galleries on Wythe Avenue into what is now the Strohl Art
Center is giving the visual arts a venue worthy of the quality
of the programming here. This new construction includes additional
climate controlled exhibition space as well as a substantially
improved gift shop and greatly expanded storage, office and workspace
for gallery staff. The completion of the new Melvin Johnson Sculpture
Garden serves to lead visitors into the new portion of Strohl
Art Center.
No less important, the first of three construction
phases was completed in 2007 in the award winning design of the
School of Art's faculty studios and the Joan Lincoln Ceramics
Studios, as well as substantially improved sculpture and printmaking
facilities. This year the north wing of the building is undergoing
a similar rebirth. In the coming summer the life modeling sculpture
class will be moving into a new home in the north pod of the
School of Art, with high ceilings, expanded floor space, a porch
and wonderful views overlooking the lake.
Additionally, this
spring the two studios behind Sheldon Hall will be upgraded with
air-conditioning, finished walls and ceilings, sinks and storage
facilities. Unlike the past when only one studio served all of
the School of Art's special studies painting and drawing classes,
space for these classes has now been doubled. Both of these studios
will be used for special studies art classes in painting, drawing,
and a new mixed media bookmaking workshop.
Finally, after next summer the third and
final phase of the renovation will take place when the south
wing of the School of Art building, including painting studios,
the large drawing studio, and the visual arts office will be
renovated over the off-season. 2009 will also mark the 100th
anniversary of the original construction of the School of Art,
one of the premier examples of buildings designed by renowned
architect E.B. Green.
