Bird, Tree & Garden Club / CABA
The mission of the Chautauqua Area Bat Association (CABA) is to educate individuals and the public entities about the benefits of bats in order to control biting insects and reduce crop damage and to enhance the bat population of the region by protecting bats and their habitats and developing additional bat habitats.
Relationship to the BTG
CABA is a committee of the historic Chautauqua Bird, Tree & Garden Club founded in 1913. In 1988 the BTG funded a six year bat study and CABA and BTG have supported bat research for the past 4 summers.
"Bat Chat"
The Chautauqua Bird, Tree & Garden Club offers a free one-hour "bat chat" every Wednesday during the season at 4:15 p.m. at Smith-Wilkes Hall on Foster Ave. just uphill from the Athenaeum Hotel Annex.
Helpful Information About Bats
To remove a flying bat from your residence, open doors and windows, turn out the lights, and it will leave on its own. If the bat is at rest, cover it with a small bowl and gently slide stiff cardboard underneath, or cover the bat with a light towel. Gently scoop it up and take it to freedom outside.
Free Bat House Plans and Bat Houses for Sale
CABA has free bat house plans and instruction for optimum placement. For copies or for additional information or to purchase a ready made bat house for $50 for use in the Chautauqua watershed area, write to Ronald T. Rolley, M.D. at the address below or use the e-mail link on this website.
