Family Entertainment Series

Tuesday evening performances underwritten by

The Family Entertainment Series features free performances each Tuesday evening (during the Chautauqua season) at 7 p.m. in Smith-Wilkes Hall unless otherwise noted. This series appeals to family members of all ages providing fun, interactive entertainment ranging from music to mime, puppetry, dance and much more.

NOTE: For family entertainment events being held in Smith-Wilkes or Lenna Hall, patrons coming from off the grounds may obtain a free pass at the Main Gate Welcome Center will call window. These passes are valid from one hour before showtime until one hour after the performance ends. Family entertainment events being held in the Amphitheater are $16.00 per ticket for adults. Children 12 & under are free of charge and do not require tickets for entry. All evening Amphitheater tickets are valid for entry to the grounds from 4 p.m. until midnight.

Kuniko "Origami Tales"
Tuesday, June 24, 2008 - 7:00 p.m.

Returning to the series, popular Kuniko Yamamoto brings a new show that uses origami, music and audience participation to provide a magical entry into Japanese culture and the art of simplicity. Character masks, amazing flowers and a six-foot-long dragon, all made from origami, set the stage while Kuniko shares heartfelt stories from ancient Japan.

Al Simmons' "Inventive Musical Comedy"
Tuesday, July 1, 2008 - 5:00 and 7:00 p.m.

Hailing from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Al Simmons is a man dedicated to the all but lost art of combining comedy, with song, dance, sight-gags and bad puns. His costume-and-prop routines have been some of the most talked about at folk, children’s and other festivals across North America. His recordings and videos have won numerous awards over the years, and his wacky humor touches a chord in people of every age.

The Golden Dragon Acrobats
Wednesday, July 16, 2008 - 7:30 p.m.

These internationally known and tremendously talented performers will return to the Chautauqua Amphitheater to entertain, amaze and often stun the audience with their dexterity and balance. Barbara Bailey Hutchison
Tuesday, July 22, 2008 - 5:00 and 7:00 p.m.

Ms. Hutchison returns to the Smith Wilkes stage after a highly successful performance in the 2007 series. Dan Butterworth and his Marionettes
Tuesday, July 29, 2008 - 5:00 and 7:00 p.m.

**Double Performance**

Chautauqua welcomes a relative new performer (he performed here many, many years ago) to the series, from the state of Rhode Island. Dan, along with his troupe of marionettes, will perform “Carnaval del Mundo”. This is a unique experience in puppet theater, since there is no wall between the audience and the puppeteer, and there are no words. The audience will experience a world of music, dance and magic that provides enchanting family entertainment.

Chautauqua Regional Youth Ballet
Tuesday, August 12, 2008 - 7:00 p.m.

**This performance will be held in Lenna Hall**

This extremely talented group of young dancers, and their Artistic Director, Monika Alch, return to the series, to perform a variety of classical and contemporary dance. CRYB is the area’s premier school for classical ballet training and is located in Jamestown, NY. They stage a full-length production of the Nutcracker each December, a Spring Gala performance and many smaller outreach performances throughout the year. Students come from throughout Chautauqua County and the neighboring Warren, PA area. We are pleased to have this organization showcase their talent for the series, again this year.


Peter Phippen, "World Flutes: Past and Present"
Tuesday, August 19, 2008 - 7:00 p.m.

The Series is happy to announce newcomer Peter Phippen to our young Chautauquans. A Canyon Records recording artist who performs and lectures nationally, Peter will bring his flutes from around the world to delight our very young and not-so-very-young audience members. His haunting melodies and fascinating tales of myth and tradition, captures the imagination. Experience the magic, mystery and music. Peter will also perform an adult program in Lenna Hall of Wednesday, August 20 at 4 p.m.
