Because Chautauqua is a walking community with narrow streets and traffic noise concerns, the use of automobiles on the grounds is very restricted. You will, however, be given a free, limited-time street permit to unload and load luggage at your accommodation. Visitors may park in lots near the entrance gates for a daily fee. Special long-term parking rates are also available. The Institution provides regularly scheduled complimentary shuttle bus and tram service on the grounds during the season. Chautauqua Area Rural Transit System (C.A.R.T.S. (716) 665-6466) provides two round trips daily between Jamestown and Westfield for a nominal fee. The system may be used for shopping trips or to make travel connections and, on occasion, for group excursions by calling 24 hours in advance.
