Michael Ruhlman

Michael Ruhlman is a journalist
whose work has appeared in The New York Times, the Los Angeles
Times, and Gourmet among other national publications. He is most
widely known for his writing about food and the work of professional
chefs. He has written three books on the life and work of the
chef, including The Making of a Chef, The Soul of a Chef, and
The Reach of a Chef, and four cookbooks written with some of
the country's best chefs, including The French Laundry Cookbook
with Thomas Keller and A Return to Cooking with Eric Ripert.
His most recent book is The Elements of Cooking: Translating
the Chef's Craft for Every Kitchen (2007), a culinary reference
on fundamental cooking terms and ideas.
Michael's other books include,
Boys Themselves: A Return to Single-Sex Education (1996); Wooden
Boats: In Pursuit of the Perfect Craft at an American Boatyard
(2001); Walk on Water: Inside an Elite Pediatric Surgical Unit
(2003); and House: A Memoir. Other cookbooks include Bouchon,
written with Chef Keller and others from the French Laundry Cookbook
team, about French comfort food, as well as Charcuterie: The
Craft of Salting, Smoking and Curing.
Michael has appeared on several
television shows, including "Cooking Under Fire" on
PBS, and, on the Food Network, he was a judge on the "Next
Iron Chef." He has also appeared occasionally as a judge
on "Iron Chef America," and has been a featured guest
on the Travel Channel's "No Reservations" with Anthony
Bourdain in the Las Vegas and Cleveland episodes.
In addition to his appearance
in the Amphitheater, Michael will be the week's Writer-in-Residence
for the Chautauqua Writers' Center, offering a class entitled
"Food: A Writing Workshop." |
