Finding Guide to the Chautauqua
Institution
Archives Photograph Collection
The Institution, originally
the Chautauqua Lake Sunday School Assembly, was founded in 1874
as an educational experiment in out-of-school vacation learning.
It was successful and broadened almost immediately beyond courses
for Sunday School teachers to include academic subjects, music,
art and physical education.
The photograph collection of
the Chautauqua Institution is in the custody and care of the
Chautauqua Institution Archives located in the lower level of
Smith Memorial Library. The collection contains approximately
31 drawers of photographs, or 46.5 cubic feet, and over 10,000
images. The dates span from 1872 through 1995. More current photographs
are kept in the Institution Relations Department in the Colonnade
Building a active files. Eventually, the photographs are scheduled
to merge within the Archives and be classified as permanent records
through a regulated Records Management Program.
The Finding Guide to the Chautauqua
Institution Archives Photograph Collection is organized alphabetically
by category with some subdivision. Each drawer is numbered and
contains headings and folders within a specified range of the
alphabet. For example, if someone requested photographs of the
Athemaeum Hotel porches, it would be located in drawer 2 (Ar-At)
folder 9 (2.9).
The Chautauqua Institution
Archives will expand and the finding guide to the photograph
collection will be updated on a periodic basis. Please note that
photos of lecturers, evening performers and oversized images
have not been processed to be included in this collection. However,
all images in the collection are available for public use. When
the public has a request for photographic use, reference should
be made to the finding guide and the photographic use policy
to follow.
