President
The Chautauqua
Institution Board of Trustees, at its meeting on Saturday, November
8, 2003, elected Thomas M. Becker as the new president
of the Chautauqua Institution to succeed Scott McVay.
Chautauqua's
Board Chair, William Clinger said, "I am very pleased that
Tom Becker has agreed to be Chautauqua's 17th president. This
is an important decision, and the board deliberated very carefully
before arriving at the decision to forego a lengthy search process
and take immediate advantage of the 19 years of service and expertise
we found in our own Tom Becker. No one understands the mission
and vision of Chautauqua better than Tom. We are investing in
his sense of Chautauqua's future. He will provide the leadership
and passion for the Chautauqua Idea that is essential for Chautauqua
at this critical time. We are also pleased that, with the 2004
season fast-approaching and important decisions to be made, Tom
is able to begin his duties immediately. He is the best choice
for Chautauqua."
In accepting
his appointment, Becker said, "I am excited and humbled
at the opportunity to lead this exceptional organization. My
time at Chautauqua has only deepened my appreciation for challenges
of the job and the contribution of all our past presidents. I
am truly honored and want to express my gratitude to the Board
of Trustees for this opportunity. Chautauqua has long been a
singular expression of the value of lifelong learning. Our programs
of education, religion, the arts and recreation are authentic
to our history, and increasingly important for this complex and
divisive world.
"I am committed
to protecting the spirituality of Chautauqua, deepening the vibrancy
of the program and extending the reach and impact of the organization."
Becker joined
Chautauqua in March 1985 as a vice president of the Institution
and vice president of the Chautauqua Foundation. Over the years
he was promoted to executive vice president and CEO of the Foundation.
In 2001, he continued as chief executive officer of the Foundation
and was named executive vice president of Chautauqua Institution.
As chief executive, Becker oversaw the growth of the Foundation
into a professional fund-raising organization and led it to raising
over $100 million in support of the Institution.
He has a degree
in political science from Xavier University and a Masters in
Public Administration from Indiana University at South Bend where
he is a recipient of their Outstanding Alumni Award. He is a
Certified Fundraising Executive (CFRE) and member of the Association
of Fundraising Professionals (AFP).
