The Readers of Chautauqua
From the toddler whose grandparents are helping choose her first book to the octogenarian devouring the uncountable, Chautauquans have an extraordinary involvement with the written word. The Chautauqua Prize is distinctive in that its audience is a group of readers who grasp the relationship between the book and its audience, the author and the reader. The Chautauqua reader is compelled to question, and recognizes the sense of place, the sharply drawn character, and the storytelling power of a great work of narrative/literary nonfiction or fiction.
