An essential ingredient in living well.

At Chautauqua, recreation is not an afterthought, it is one of our four pillars. From its earliest days to the present, Chautauqua has embraced the recreative experience as an essential ingredient in living well.

Our recreation programs support Chautauqua's commitment to families, nurture meaningful personal relationships and a strong sense of community, and help individuals reconnect with the natural world. They respond to the real emotional, spiritual and physical needs of Chautauquans of all ages.

  • Chautauqua Health & Fitness: For more than 130 years, the Chautauqua Institution has provided opportunities to enrich the mind, body and spirit. Chautauqua Health & Fitness continues the tradition. We are pleased to provide this resource to both our summer visitors and our surrounding community.
  • Chautauqua Golf Club: The finest in golfing tradition since 1896 when golf enthusiasts first laid out a "links" course, the Chautauqua Golf Club invites you to the challenge of 36 championship holes.
  • Sailing: The impressive, new John R. Turney Sailing Center marks the southern edge of Chautauqua's waterfront, and houses the Chautauqua Sailing Department and their diverse program of weeklong classes, rentals and private lessons.
  • Sports Club: The Chautauqua Sports Club offers a wide variety of recreational and leisure activities, including recreational services and reduced rates for programs including boat rentals, sports equipment, shuffleboard, horseshoes, bridge and lawn bowling.
  • Swimming: There are four public swimming beaches within the grounds. The pool at the Turner Community Center is also open daily throughout the summer for lap swimming, open family swims and classes or special events.
  • Tennis: Tennis has a long and rich tradition at Chautauqua. Originally introduced by co-founder John Vincent in 1878, the recently completed, award-winning Chautauqua Tennis Center continues that tradition.
  • Youth: From day-camps and pre-schools, to sports instruction and reading programs, Chautauqua's popular youth programs are extensive, diverse and essential to the life of the community.
