The Chautauqua Tennis Center

Tennis has a long and rich tradition at Chautauqua. Originally introduced by co-founder John Vincent in 1878, the first lawn tennis court was set up along Chautauqua's lakefront.

The Chautauqua Tennis Center, which opened in June 2004, is located directly behind the Turner Community Center on Route 394 and boasts eight state-of-the-art, fast-dry courts. Using the patented "Hydro-Grid" system, the clay-like playing surface is kept uniformly moist by a sub-surface irrigation system. The result is a court that is consistent, gives a true bounce, is gentle on the feet and legs of players, and also drains exceptionally well, allowing for a quick return to play even after heavy rain. Two of the new courts are illuminated for night play. The new tennis center replaces the eight courts formerly located at the Main Gate.

The courts are open for play 7 a.m. - 10 p.m. daily, June 21-August 24. From May 15 - June 20 and from August 25 - October 15, the courts are open from 7 a.m. - 8 p.m.

The American Sports Builders Association (ASBA) made the Chautauqua Tennis Center the recipient of their 2004 Outstanding Tennis Facility Award. This award is presented in recognition of excellence in design and construction and is given annually, in conjunction with Racquet Sports magazine, to a select group of facilities nationwide. Projects are reviewed and critiqued by a panel of ten independent judges.

The general contractor for the Chautauqua Tennis Center was STC Contracting in Springville, NY. The court builder was Welch Tennis Courts, Inc. of Sun City, Florida.

The tennis center's pro shop is open 7 a.m.-10 p.m.daily from June 21-August 24. During the spring and fall, limited hours are maintained at the pro shop, with additional support provided by the fitness center staff in the Turner Community Center. All players must check-in at the pro shop before playing. Racquet- stringing may be arranged, and balls, grips, water and Gatorade are available for sale. We are a distributor of Prince tennis products. Tournament and junior development registration forms can be obtained at the pro shop, and private lessons can be arranged.

Accessing the Courts

All players must check in at the pro shop before playing.

From within the Institution grounds, walking access is via the Hurst parking lot and Turner service road, or via the pedestrian path from the Woodlands. Regular bus and tram services (North Route) stop at the pro shop at approximately 20-minute intervals between 8:15 a.m. and 7:45 p.m. Bike racks are provided behind the pro shop.

For players coming to the tennis center from the surrounding community, complimentary parking is provided at the Turner Community Center, entrance on Route 394. Enter Turner via the center doors and walk through the lobby to the Turner Gate/Ticket Office at the rear of the building. Ask for a "tennis walking pass" at the gate. This complimentary pass must be stamped and validated at the tennis center pro shop when checking in and paying for court time. After playing, turn in the pass at the Turner gate as you leave. This pass is valid for access to the tennis center only and may not be used for general admission to the Institution grounds, Amphitheater events or other programs.

Reserving Courts

Players may reserve next day morning court time (7, 8, 9 and 10 a.m. court hours) by drawing in the daily 5 p.m. lottery at the Farmer's Market area near the Main Gate. Players draw numbers that signify sign-up order. Lowest number registers first and has first choice of court and time. This is also an excellent opportunity to arrange games and meet new players. After the lottery results have been recorded at the pro shop (approximately 5:30 p.m.), all remaining next day court time is available for reservation either by phone (716-357-6276) or in-person at the pro shop. However, members may reserve non-lottery court hours one day in advance.

a
Contract Court Time

A limited number of reserved court time blocks are available for minimum 10-week bookings. Block times are limited to evening hours and weekends and must be pre-paid. A discounted rate is offered. Inquire at the pro shop for details.

a
