"Maintaining the Amateur Status of Intercollegiate Athletics"

A special panel co-sponsored with the Chautauqua Institution will open the Contemporary Issues season. Andrew Sorensen PhD, President of The University of South Carolina, will lead a panel discussion on sports and higher education including implications of college football. With an educational and professional background rich in ethics and medical sociology, Dr. Sorensen brings deep insight to this multifaceted issue.

"Developing Leaders for the 21st Century"

Leading in to the fourth of July week will be Robert Foglesong PhD, current President of Mississippi State University and retired four star general in the United States Air Force. Having spent a significant amount of the past decade as a national security advisor at Cabinet and Presidential levels, Dr. Foglesong will share his understanding of developing relevant leadership given a constantly changing national and international environment.

Norman Ornstein, Chautauqua's program consultant for Week Two, is a resident scholar at the American Enterprise Institute for Public Policy Research in Washington, DC. He also serves as an election analyst for CBS News and writes a weekly column called "Congress Inside Out" for Roll Call newspaper. His campaign finance working group of scholars and practitioners helped shape the major law, known as McCain/Feingold that reformed the campaign financing system.

The first woman in Ohio to be elected to the office of secretary of state, Jennifer Brunner brings a unique perspective and exceptional credentials to the role of Ohio's top election official. Her prior service as Legislative Counsel for the Secretary of State's Office, 13 years of election law private practice experience, including serving as a special prosecutor for election fraud, and past experience as a member of the Franklin County Board of Elections have prepared her well for the office of Secretary of State.

Thomas Cottle, PhD, is a sociologist and clinical psychologist, as well as a Professor of Education at Boston University. He has done extensive research on how social construct influenced greatly by popular culture has effected the adolescence period.

William Safire of The New York Times wrote that his work represents “some of the most profound and stylish writing in America today.” His television essays for “The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer” on PBS have won a Peabody and an Emmy award. His essays for TIME magazine have won two George Polk Awards, awards from the American Bar Association, the Overseas Press Club, and others.
