CHAUTAUQUA LITERARY JOURNAL

GENERAL GUIDELINES

Poetry: We welcome poems that exhibit the writer’s craft and attention to language, employ striking images and metaphors, engage the mind as well as the emotions, and reveal insights into the larger world of human concerns. The editor invites traditional as well as experimental work. Submit a maximum of four poems, typed single-spaced. Include name, address, and e-mail address on each
poem.

Short Stories: Fiction should be a maximum of 25 double-spaced pages or about 7000 words. We are particularly interested in short stories, self-contained novel excerpts, or short shorts that take risks with form and the traditional elements of plot and point of view. Characters, setting, and theme should be well developed. A superior story will exhibit the writer’s attention to language—both in nuance and detail—and reveal a masterful control of syntax.

Creative Nonfiction: Most of the same guidelines apply here as for short
stories. We’d like to see essays that take risks with point of view and use
language and syntax to create exposition that develops almost musically—in the way a sonata might evolve. The writer should demonstrate expert knowledge of his or her subject and compelling insights. We are open to a wide range of subjects, but if you are uncertain whether your topic will be suitable, please query the editor.

Book Reviews: Please query first. Chautauqua Literary Journal publishes a small number of brief reviews of recent books, with a special focus on emerging writers and small press publications. Most of these reviews are assigned.

Manuscripts submitted without a self-addressed, stamped envelope (SASE) with sufficient postage for return will be discarded. If you do not wish your manuscript returned, enclose a note to that effect along with a business-sized SASE for notification. The editor will make every effort to respond to submissions within three months. Turnaround time is quickest during the summer.

All submissions must be original and unpublished in any form. Though we
discourage simultaneous submissions, the editor asks the courtesy of being notified immediately if a work under consideration is no longer available. Brief cover letters are encouraged. Unsolicited e-mail submissions are not accepted. Chautauqua Literary Journal acquires First Rights and reserves the nonexclusive right to reprint the work in a future anniversary issue of the magazine. Payment to authors at this time is two contributor’s copies.
